I am Zeo Zhang, a creative technologist and artist, weaving together the threads of code, digital media, and physical and virtual forms. Born in 1999 and currently based in Los Angeles, my practice encompasses generative, interactive, time-based, and 3D works, using technology as both a material and a method. My approach is steeped in a personal history of computer science, where programming languages serve as a medium for expression, as natural as the brush for a painter. The themes central to my work often revolve around emotion and internal conflicts. I draw on the simplicity and emotional depth found in the works of Shigeo Fukuda, striving to distill complex psychological states into shared visual experiences. It's an endeavor that began with my own need to translate profound feelings into forms that others can see and understand. Digital tools are my primary allies in this mission. I employ code alongside 3D modeling and digital drawing software like Procreate to create works that are not only visually engaging but also portable. This flexibility allows for an exploration of both the tangible and intangible realms, enabling me to experiment across digital displays and physically reachable media. In my current projects, words and emotions take center stage, aiming to evoke a sense of shared understanding in viewers. Their realization often results in comments like, "I feel the same way sometimes," which reflects the emotional resonance I hope to achieve. The challenge lies in balancing the visible outcome with the intricate process of creation, a challenge I embrace as I continue to evolve my practice. My work resonates deeply with the inner workings of the human mind, often at odds with the fast-paced world that focuses more on external appearances. I invite the viewer to pause and reflect, to acknowledge the invisible, ever-changing dynamics of how we think and feel.
